Get Rid of These 5 Things

You know spring cleaning, but for me, summer cleaning is a thing too. We made it past the Chaos that was May, and have navigated the shift in routines that summer brings... now we are settled into summer, and it’s time for a little purging.

What’s Out This Summer?

Perfectionism

Perfectionism has been a heavy load on my shoulders for far too long. It might seem like a noble pursuit, but it leads straight to exhaustion and an inability to appreciate the beauty of the journey itself.

The OUTLIST Strategy: Write down the areas in your life where perfectionism is holding you back, then choose a different road. Let go of the need to be flawless and embrace the journey.

Self-Doubt

Self-doubt has been a silent saboteur for far too long. That nagging voice in your head that tells you that you’re not good enough, smart enough, or capable enough hinders you from taking risks, pursuing your dreams, and embracing your true potential.

The OUTLIST Strategy: Write down instances where self-doubt has stopped you from doing things you truly wanted to do. Challenge those thoughts and collect evidence to prove those doubting voices wrong.

Excessive Busyness

In a world that often celebrates busyness, it's far too easy to get caught in a never-ending circle of overcommitment and overwhelm. And, as you’ve noticed, circles don’t do a great job of helping you move forward.

The OUTLIST Strategy: List activities, commitments, and tasks that no longer align with your priorities, and start saying “no” to things that leave you running in circles.

Toxic Relationships

Toxic relationships, be it with friends, family members, or colleagues, are energy vampires. Maybe you’ve held onto them, hoping things would change, but it’s only prolonging the pain and halting your personal growth.

The OUTLIST Strategy: Write down the relationships you know are toxic. I know it’s not easy, but it is essential for your well-being. Set some healthy boundaries and, when necessary, distance yourself from those individuals.

Overthinking

Do you analyze every situation, past, present, and future, and find that it leads right to anxiety and indecision?

The OUTLIST Strategy: Pinpoint situations where overthinking tends to take over. Practice mindfulness and meditation to become more present and to let go of excessive rumination.

Do Less to Gain More

Let's dive deeper into my OUTLIST strategy. This is a game-changer when it comes to simplifying your life and making room for what truly matters. It is like taking inventory of your world to identify what is holding you back and then making a plan to let go so you can launch yourself forward.

Reflect on What Needs to Go

Picture me ten years ago, juggling a busy career, a heap of responsibilities, and a mind full of clutter. I realized I needed change. That's when I started my OUTLIST journey. I reflected on every nook and cranny of my life. It wasn't just about cleaning out my closet; it was about cleaning out my mind. I asked myself, "What no longer serves me?" It could be that self-doubt that always held me back or even the material things I held onto for no reason.

Write it Down

Grab a notebook and start writing down everything that pops into your head, as out listed, from old clothes to negative thoughts to out-of-date coping strategies.

Assess the Impact

Now comes the tough part. You need to assess each item on the list. How is it affecting your life? Does it lift you or drag you down?

Prioritize for Release

Highlight the items on your OUTLIST that are real troublemakers. These are the thoughts, habits, or belongings that need to go pronto.

Plan the Great Release

Now, here's where the magic happens. Make a plan for each item on your OUTLIST. For material possessions, start by decluttering your physical space one drawer at a time. For emotional baggage, take your time to work through those tangled feelings. For destructive thought patterns, practice mindfulness to let go of them, like releasing a balloon into the sky.

Take Baby Steps

It is crucial not to rush this process. Start with small steps, and tackle one area of life at a time. You don't have to do it all in one day.

Celebrate Your Progress

Most importantly, celebrate your victories along the way. Every time you let go of something, whether it is an old pair of jeans or a limiting belief, give yourself a pat on the back. Recognizing your progress makes the journey enjoyable and motivating.

The Result is Worth the Challenge

It is hard to let things go, but I have found that whenever I’ve finally mustered the courage to release old thoughts, habits, or belongings, it has opened doors to unexpected joys and experiences.

There might be moments of doubt along your journey, but as you start to see the positive changes in your life – the newfound clarity, the reduced stress, the freedom to pursue what truly matters – you will realize that letting go is more than worth it.
