Get Back an Hour of Your Time

“We all have 24 hours a day.”

Sure, but it never feels like enough, does it? What if I told you I know a few simple ways you can take back at least an hour in your day?

Get Snobby with Your Time

As the saying goes, “Time is gold.”  It is one of the most valuable resources we possess, so don’t you think we should get SNOBBY with it? Now, I’m not talking about being rude, but, as I always say, “be approachable to many, but accessible to few.” You do not owe your time to anyone unless you decide that you do.

Get your Time Back

Plan and Set Boundaries for Your Week Each Sunday

Plan what you will and won’t do this week BEFORE the week starts. This allows you to organize your time in a way that aligns with your goals and priorities. Will you allow that coworker this week to steal your hours with his venting? Or will you kindly set boundaries with him when he starts in, and ask if he can come back at a later date?

Prioritize Goals on a Quarterly Basis

I have found that if I pick THREE goals I want to achieve each quarter (not 10!) it helps me hold myself accountable for where I spend my time. Make sure these goals are achievable and measurable. This takes some trial and error and self-awareness.

For example, I used to say, “I am going to finish this manuscript by March 1.” But then life happens, I don’t finish, and I feel like a failure on March 1. Now I rephrase that goal to be, “I am going to write for 30 minutes, three days a week.” This is 1) more achievable and 2) allows me to take smaller steps that build my confidence. I am MUCH more likely to set a timer and write for 30 minutes than I am to spend 16 hours in a row meeting a deadline.

Practice Good Time Management Skills

As a woman physician, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the number of tasks that must be completed every day. Developing a strategic plan and practicing good time management go hand in hand whenever you want to take back time for yourself.

Delegate like a Boss!

How many times do you find yourself multitasking while juggling work, family, and everything else?  Multitasking can be exhausting, and while you may think you are accomplishing a lot, you are often left disoriented and lacking in boundaries.

My advice for you is to delegate all non-essential tasks to others and concentrate on your top priorities. With delegation comes trust. It is normal to feel uneasiness when giving away responsibility to others, but trust me when I say it is so worth it!

Take a Break – or Five!

If you're feeling overwhelmed or burned out, please take a break. Rest. Recharge. Regain a healthy mindset and radical boundaries, and come back STRONGER. You deserve it. No really... YOU DO.

Taking breaks at work (even just for 5 minutes) helps prevent burnout and clears your mind to get going again. It will never hurt to take some time alone and just breathe it all out. Inhale, exhale.
