Where is Your Safe Space?

I'm Back In My Safe Space

After 13 months of living in a rental home 30 miles from our home because our house was destroyed in a tornado, we are BACK in our rebuilt home. I cannot tell you how much better I feel being back in my safe space. Truly, it is remarkable what being in my happy place has done for my mood. I feel safe. I feel warm. I feel happy!

Being back in my own space has got me thinking about the safe spaces we all need.

We spend the entirety of our lives working, looking out for others, building social relationships, and simply trying to get through our day-to-day. At the end of the day, we all need somewhere we can truly be ourselves: our own safe space.

Looking back on my younger self, I would never have imagined that creating time for myself would be such a struggle, that putting myself as the lowest priority would become my default. Early in my career, I was in constant motion, trying to become the physician I wanted to be. My life revolved around working in the hospital and raising my family.

Somewhere in that first decade, as I describe in my book Between Grit and Grace, I found myself exhausted, confused, burned out, and unmotivated. Even in my career achievements and my children's milestones, I felt empty.

Home is where the heart is

It’s real. When negativity is raging all around you, it’s human nature to run away to the place where you feel safest, where you can breathe it all out, and simply be you. This safe space can be a place, a thing, a memory, a person, or just embracing your one true self.

For me, having my own safe space at home is a critical part of my personal wellness strategy. It is a place where only I go. It is my office, and my family knows that when I am there, I am off limits. I am decompressing. Breathing. Recharging. Processing. So, I ask you…Do you have this place?

In my book, Brave Boundaries, I talk about the need for other women to have their own safe space, a space where they recharge, escape, process, think, pray, read, relax, and unwind. We all need a safe space. Don’t have one? Create one for yourself.

Find a little corner somewhere with a comfy place to sit. Grab some soft pillows or a blanket, and then (this is the most important part), set a boundary with the people you live with, letting them know what this space means to you.

Having your own safe space is one of the greatest securities you can give yourself. In times of crisis or doubt or even just a bad day, your safe space can be your fallback and an ultimate lifesaver. It is the place where you can let it all go and be unapologetically yourself!

“As a family physician in private practice, every dollar I spend on continuing medical education comes directly from my bottom line. That makes me extremely selective about the conferences I attend. Brave Enough is the one conference I never hesitate to invest in—it’s worth every cent. Each time I attend, I come away not only with valuable professional insights but also personally enriched and recharged. It consistently puts me in a better headspace, reigniting my passion for medicine and reminding me why I chose this path in the first place. It’s more than CME—it’s a lifeline.” - BE Conference Attendee
