Do you ever get tired of the “fitfluencers” and “health gurus” out there trying to tell you how to live a healthier life? You hear people talk about how a healthier lifestyle reduces stress, but then you try to be healthier and find that it’s only added to your stress. Let me let you in on a little secret... You don’t have time to spend an hour a day at the gym, make your pasta from scratch, or remember all 25 supplements you’re supposed to take to have a healthy gut.
You are a busy, high achieving woman, and you need a health plan that actually fits your lifestyle. The good news is that living a healthier life doesn’t have to consume your life. It’s actually more about simple habits and mindset shifts than carving out hours of your day to get shredded.
Your Healthy Lifestyle Mindset Shift
Ask yourself: What small adjustments can I make to incorporate healthier habits into what I am already doing every day? Seriously! That is all it takes to start on a journey to a healthier you. Don’t underestimate the power of the simple shifts that add up to big changes. Little by little is still progress, and it’s more powerful than you might think! Let’s take a look at a few areas you can start applying this mindset to today.
10k Steps a Day? It’s Possible
You don’t have to go for a five mile walk at 4 AM every day to make this happen. Remember, we are applying a mindset of simplicity. There are plenty of ways for you, as a busy working woman, to get more movement into your day simply by fitting it into what you are already doing. All it takes is a bit of mindfulness and determination.
Try these simple tricks:
- Park further away
- Use the restroom on the far side of the building
- Take a couple of 10 minute breaks to walk around the building
- Get a walking pad and stand up desk, and turn your busy work into a workout
Don’t Forget to Eat
Food is important. You need fuel to accomplish all the amazing things you are working toward. So don’t skip your meals. Here is the mindset shift: You need to take care of yourself so you can continue taking care of everyone else. Make the simple, everyday choice to fill your body with nourishing food and use the break to take a moment for yourself.
Here are a few ways you can make your meals healthier:
- Take a moment in the morning to nourish your body
- Don’t skip your lunch break
- Pack a healthy lunch or snack to avoid the vending machine
- Order a healthy meal and have it delivered to you
- Eat outside or by a window to get some sunlight
- Eat by yourself to clear your mind, or with a friend who always leaves you feeling encouraged
Are You Dehydrated?
Dehydration is a huge energy killer. And frankly, you just don’t have time for low energy. Yes, drinking more water means more bathroom breaks, but that just means more steps in your day and more time to clear your head, so really, it’s a win-win.
A few ways to stay hydrated:
- Have a few strategically placed tumblers of water (at home, in your office, in the car)
- Set reminders on your phone to take water breaks
- For every cup of coffee, drink two 16-oz glasses of water
- Add electrolytes for additional hydration and flavor (look for electrolytes without added sugar)
Take a Moment for Mindfulness
When you take care of your thoughts, you’ll find that you have a clearer head to focus, stay grounded in the present, and handle stress better.
Try these simple mindfulness tips:
- Every time you take a restroom break, take a moment to stop, close your eyes, place your hand on your heart, and simply breathe. What are you feeling? What can you let go of? What are you grateful for?
- Write down three things every morning or evening that you are thankful for (say, “thank you” for them out loud. You’ll be surprised at how quickly this can shift your mood.)
- Send a quick text to someone you care about just to encourage them or let them know you are grateful for them
Build a Winning Morning Routine
You set the tone for your day the moment you get up. This is why it is so important to be intentional with your morning routine. It doesn’t have to be chaos, or that terrible feeling that you are running behind.
When you take intentional time for yourself in the morning, you will feel the effects of it all day. This may mean going to bed 30 minutes earlier so you can get up 30 minutes earlier. Trust me, it is worth it, and you will be so glad you did.
My tips to have a great morning:
- Start with Affirmation and Gratitude. As soon as you wake up, place your hand over your heart and affirm yourself and the success of the day in order to set up a healthy, growth mindset. Then think of three things you are grateful for and say, “thank you.”
- Hydration first. Start with at least 8oz of water (feel free to add electrolytes for extra hydration), then enjoy your morning coffee or tea.
- Move your body for at least 10 minutes. This could be stretching, walking, or a full blown HIIT workout. The point here is to get the blood flowing and give your body some love. (Bonus tip: You have a lot of serious things on your plate, so make this part fun! Maybe that means dancing around the kitchen in your bathrobe or doing yoga with the dog. Be joyful and carefree as you move your body and watch it lift your mood throughout the day.)
Ask yourself: What can I adjust in my everyday routine to create healthier habits?
These adjustments won’t take much time or effort, but they will pay off in big ways and set you on a path to a healthier you. The most challenging part is in your mind, so be sure to work on adjusting your mindset. Healthier living doesn’t have to be overwhelming; it just has to be intentional. Make it a boundary.
Let go of the idea that being healthy means dedicating your life to the gym, or to eating only organic, locally sourced meals that take hours to make from scratch. You can be a healthier version of you today with just a few simple and practical habit shifts.
