Now more than ever, in our fast-paced and demanding world, a sense of urgency seems to permeate every aspect of our lives. From the mundane tasks of our everyday routines to the relentless demands of our work and responsibilities, there is constant pressure to get things done quickly and efficiently. If you are like me, you may find yourself sacrificing your well-being, particularly your mental health.

It is easy to get caught up pleasing others and seeking validation. We try so hard to meet everyone's expectations and fit into society's mold, even if it messes with our well-being. We take on way too much, playing multiple roles and ignoring the signs of burnout. We just keep pushing ourselves, thinking it is all part of the game.

Here is the bitter truth: our mental health is often sidelined by the relentless pursuit of productivity and success.

We ignore the red flags, even when we see them waving. We are stuck in this mindset that stress, anxiety, and exhaustion are just part of the deal when it comes to chasing our goals and dreams. We think sacrificing our mental well-being is the price we pay, hoping that we won't pay the consequences until it is too late.

But guess what? It is time to flip the script, sister. It all starts with being self-aware.

The State of Being Self-Aware

I recently learned how self-awareness is a hidden gem inside us, just waiting to be discovered and tapped into. But here's the million-dollar question: How do we even know if we're self-aware or not?

Well, let me break it down for you. Being self-aware is like diving into the deep end of self-discovery. It's about truly getting to know ourselves – our thoughts, emotions, and actions – and understanding how we impact the people and world around us. It is not just about existing and going with the flow. It is about being fully awake and aware, taking a step back to observe and reflect on what's going on inside us.

Think of it as peeling back the layers of an onion. It's about exploring the core of who we are – our identity, beliefs, values, and what drives us. It is a whole journey of self-exploration that goes beyond the surface level.

Being self-aware is like having this superpower of looking inside ourselves and examining our thoughts and feelings. We can step back and see our thoughts for what they are – not necessarily the ultimate truth, but just how we see things based on our own experiences and beliefs, realizing that our thoughts might not always be the real deal.

And you know what? This self-awareness lets us question ourselves and break free from our assumptions, biases, and beliefs that hold us back. It clears the path for personal growth and becoming a better version of ourselves. Being self-aware also means knowing our strengths and weaknesses. We can see what we are good at, our special talents and skills, and also the areas where we need a little work. This means recognizing what makes us awesome and also where we can improve.

So, if you find yourself asking: "Am I self-aware?" Well, digging deep, being curious about yourself, and paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and actions will give you the answer. You can also ask yourself these questions:

  • What are my core values and beliefs?
  • How do I feel in different situations and with different people?
  • What are my strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are my goals and aspirations?
  • How do I respond to challenges and setbacks?
  • What are my self-limiting beliefs?
  • How do I communicate and interact with others?
  • What activities or experiences bring me joy and fulfillment?
  • How do I manage stress and practice self-care?
  • How do I respond to feedback and criticism?

As you go along the journey of self-awareness, make sure to align your goals with Brave Balance, the ultimate 12 Week Masterclass that is all about overcoming burnout, setting healthy boundaries, and defining your life goals.

5 Ways Self-Awareness Helps Our Mental Health

Self-awareness is like the secret sauce for keeping our mental health in tip-top shape. It is about knowing ourselves inside and out and doing what is right for us without compromising our well-being. But it is not a one-time thing. It is a lifelong adventure that involves taking a good look at ourselves, staying present at the moment, and treating ourselves with kindness and understanding. So, here's the lowdown on how being self-aware gives our mental health a major boost:

Regulates Our Emotions

When it comes to understanding our feelings, being self-aware is a game-changer. It is all about tuning in and getting what is going on inside us. No judgment, no pushing it down. This awareness gives us the power to handle our emotions without flipping out or doing something we'll regret. Instead of getting swamped by how we feel, self-awareness lets us respond in a more calm and composed manner.

When we are also in touch with our emotions, we start to notice the things that set us off and the patterns that mess with our moods or emotional states. riggers can vary greatly from person to person. It can be all over the place, like work stuff or our expectations. But for me, one thing is for sure. When I am faced with situations like this, practicing mindfulness helps me. Mindfulness helps me cultivate a non-reactive and accepting attitude to observe my thoughts and emotions objectively. It enables me to respond to my stressors in a more calm and composed manner.

Do not let emotions overpower your way of thinking. It all starts with creating space to truly hear yourself. That's where my transformative Breathing Course comes in - a gateway to mindfulness, a powerful tool that can help you cultivate self-awareness, reduce stress, and foster a deep connection with your inner being.

Stress Management

When it comes to handling stress, being self-aware is super important. It means being aware of our own emotions, thoughts, and actions, and how external factors can mess with us. By paying attention to what stresses us out and why, we can figure out what's bugging us.

Are you feeling like life's got you spinning in a thousand directions? I hear you. We all have those moments when it feels impossible to catch a break. But guess what? My FREE toolkit is designed to help you destress, find that elusive balance, and take back control of your day.

Once we know our stress triggers, we can take action to deal with them. This may involve implementing stress or burnout management strategies that meet our individual needs and preferences. Some effective strategies include engaging in relaxation exercises, setting healthy boundaries, and doing things that spark joy in us.

Most of the time, burnout and stress, often go hand in hand. So, if you're currently feeling exhausted or dangerously close to reaching your limit, check out my YouTube video where I share some useful tips on how to handle burnout.

Improved Self-Care

Being self-aware is like having this internal compass that tells us when we need a breather, some downtime, or a friendly hand. It serves as a built-in radar for taking care of our mental health. When we are self-aware, we know when it is time to hit the pause button and do things that bring us joy. We dive headfirst into our favorite hobbies, whether it is listening to podcasts, cooking, or perhaps reading my book, Brave Boundaries. Self-care begins the moment we set boundaries that give us the time we need for ourselves. It's all about creating that me-time we all crave.

Self-care may also be when we surround ourselves with people who lift our spirits, who always make us laugh, or give us that boost of encouragement. And most importantly, we show ourselves some love and kindness. We treat ourselves with compassion, giving ourselves permission to take a break and recharge. By putting self-care front and center, we become masters at avoiding burnout. We prevent that feeling of being completely fried and exhausted. Instead, we find a balance that keeps us going and helps us navigate life's unexpected twists and turns like a champ.

Enhancing Our Relationships

When we are self-aware, it improves our relationships with others. We start to get a handle on how we communicate, what pushes our buttons, and how we act in relationships. And you know what? This understanding helps us be better listeners, more empathetic, and good at talking things out. Being self-aware means, we are tuned in to our own emotions and reactions. So, when conflicts come up, we handle them like pros. We navigate the stormy waters with skill, finding resolutions that work for everyone involved. And the best part? Our connections with others get even deeper and more meaningful.

So, embrace that self-awareness and watch your relationships bloom. With that, we can be awesome communicator, super empathetic friend, and someone who knows how to keep the good vibes flowing.

Personal Growth and Development

Self-awareness is a catalyst for our growth journey. It means knowing ourselves inside and out, recognizing our strengths, where we could use some work, and how we can improve. Once self-awareness settles in, it becomes easier to set goals that truly matter to us and go all in to make them happen.

One of the amazing things about being self-aware is that we become masters at spotting those self-limiting beliefs. You know, those thoughts that hold us back and whisper, "You can't do it" or "You're not good enough." But with our self-awareness, we are more than ready to challenge those negative thoughts and replace them with a positive mindset. We become our own personal cheerleaders, cheering ourselves on that we are doing great and we can make it.
